 Hypnotherapy

Definition: Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. Hypnotherapy has been shown to be the most effective form of complementary therapy, because it works with the mind's natural way of changing and creating instinctive responses.

Hypnotherapy is probably most well known for helping to change unwanted behaviours such as stopping smoking, and in weight loss, but is also effective for a wide range of problems including obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, panic attacks, and self confidence to name a few.

About Hypnosis

You may wonder what to expect when attending an hypnosis session. When you first attend, one of the Consultants will put you at ease by fully explaining what hypnosis is and what it is not. They will explain how your session(s) will be conducted. A history of your presenting issue will be taken and used to format the session(s). All information is held in the strictest of confidence.

Depending on which route is being taken, there maybe relaxing music playing at a comfortable level in the background. The Consultant will speak to you in a calm, relaxed manner as you are guided down to a relaxed state where the therapy will begin. The most important thing to reassure you is this, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. You are wide awake and aware of your surroundings, yet you somehow feel detached from it all. You could open your eyes at any time, you could even get up and walk away if you wanted to, but the experience is so pleasant that you would stay there all day if you could. You will hear every word that the therapist  will say to you, yet the voice can sometimes seem so distant. As you turn your attention inwards, into yourself, you may lose track of time, just as you do when you are lying in bed relaxing (but not asleep). Although feeling somewhat detached, you remain in full control of yourself. You are having a typical hypnotic experience.

Hypnosis is becoming increasing popular, partly because of the huge amount of evidence that hypnotherapy works, and partly due to the popular stage shows that have been presented by such people like Paul Mckenna.

Hypnosis is a totally natural state of mind and a pleasantly relaxing experience. Hypnosis is not sleep: when we are in hypnosis, we are usually more aware of what is taking place than usual, and our senses typically function more efficiently than normal. Nobody could ever be made to do anything they did not want to do. What takes place in a hypnosis session is normal, non-magical and has predictable results.

Most people will enter hypnosis automatically, and will do it several times a day: when daydreaming, meditating, reading a book or watching television. It is simply a state of focused relaxation. Please note you do not necessarily need to be relaxed to enter hypnosis. If you want to enter hypnosis, then you certainly can, and you can do it quite easily. There are only a few people who cannot be hypnotised;  those who are high on drugs, very young children or a person with a severe learning disability. Therefore, if you can read this paragraph, you can be hypnotised!

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis; we are merely  facillitators who provide you with the opportunity to enter hypnosis if you want to. If you are ready and willing to enter hypnosis, and you follow the Consultants simple instructions during the session, then you will be hypnotised.

During a therapy session, the Consultants may use either voice or special frequencies to induce you into the beautiful, natural state of mind known as hypnosis. Although you are likely to feel a sense of mental and physical relaxation and your memory may well be enhanced, it is worth remembering that there is no such thing as a hypnotised feeling; each person experiences hypnosis in their own way.  We do not use swinging watches – or spiral wheels ! We do provide a professional service where you are cared for in a reassuring manner. We do have the expertise to assist you in finding the solution to your problem. You will be perfectly able to drive, or to do anything else after a session of hypnotherapy. In fact, you will probably feel better than you have done in a long time!

We would not hypnotise anyone taking medication for clinical depression, however, there are NLP and EFT techniques that can be suitably used to treat this condition.
